Apple tablets running iPhone OS 3.2 spotted by Flurry Analytics

Mauro Dalu

iSlate Apple Tablet Demo Jan 26 2010It is just a matter of hours now to know the truth on iPad or iSlate devices, whatever the name will be… and I’ll be here updating you for sure.

In the meantime, Peter Farago, VP of of Marketing at Flurry, noted that his company believes the devices running iPhone OS 3.2 are Apple tablets because the hardware, when asked via software, did not identify itself as an iPhone. He also said that some devices testing iPhone OS 4.0 have been spotted — but they leave the Cupertino campus, while those running iPhone OS 3.2 do not.

“If you were able to see the data we see, at the level of granularity,” Farago said, “it would be clear to you as well.”

What if there is no Apple Tablet?

Mauro Dalu

Apple-FutureA few recent articles on various rumors sites made me think that in late January we may very well not see any Apple iSlate tablet-sized iPod-Touch-like or Mac-like device.

It is very likely that a new iPhone SDK will be introduced, and that this will allow iPhone Apps to support different screen resolutions. It is very likely that a 10-11″ OLED/LCD display based product will be introduced, but…

PHP Mailer with Email Attachments that supports Mac OS X’s Mail

Radu Cojocaru

PHP-mail-script-compatible-with-osx-apple-mailWe needed a server-side script recently to send emails with attachments from an iPhone App. We’ve chosen PHP because we wanted to keep it as simple as possible (we wanted no dependencies).

The emails sent (and attachments) looked good in a few email systems, until we checked with Mac Mail. Check the image at the left to see how it was displayed. Read on to learn how to solve this issue and see the full code for the script!

How to build a 3D tag cloud on iPhone — challenges and solutions

how-to-3D-tagcloud-iphone-sdkSince the iPhone tocuhscreen is quite small and has great support for interactivity a 3D tag cloud looks an ideal choice for an iPhone application user interface. Neither iPhone SDK classes nor 3rd party libraries have 3D tag cloud classes, at least no libraries I heard of, so I implemented it from scratch.

You can see the final result in the Toneaphone Ringtones iPhone App we developed last year.

Mauro Dalu

Rhodes-PhoneGap-Titanium-cross-platform-mobile-frameworksWhat is the best cross-platform mobile framework out there?
Let’s take a look at the main three competitors.

First of all, cross-platform compatibility is all about compromising on the native look, feel and features of devices. Therefore, if you’re looking into creating a 3D game or an interactive, multimedia, animated app, you’re looking in the wrong direction.

PhoneGap, Titanium and Rhodes are all based on web technologies and are aimed at web developers that want to leverage their current skills set to the mobile apps world.

Where is the text-to-speech “speak” command in Mac OS X Snow Leopard?

Mauro Dalu

Add-to-itunes-as-spoken-textI was used to have a “speak” command somewhere in the services menu to be accessible whenever you had a text selected. In Snow Leopard, that has disappeared but a new Automator command is provided instead.

The command will convert any text to an iTunes track containing the speech synthesis reading the text. A new “Text-to-Speech” album is added to iTunes containing the tracks.

Mauro Dalu

islate-feverThe CES in Las Vegas saw the debut of three new e-reader devices, while Dell and Microsoft have demonstrated prototypes of tablet devices (slate PCs).

During his keynote at CES, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled a touchscreen tablet from HP running Windows 7, that was dubbed a “slate PC.” The touchscreen HP device that was shown was just one of many new products and services revealed by Ballmer. A YouTube video is available here.

Dell has briefly demoed a 5-inch device — which is reminiscent of larger Apple iPhone or iPod touch — also referring to it as a “slate.”
