Apple iPad: could be cheaper, really!

Mauro Dalu

Steve-Jobs-and-iPadiSuppli Corp. reported that the multi-touch 9.7-inch display on the iPad could cost around $80, while its custom-designed A4 processor would cost about $17 per unit. The 16GB of memory is estimated to cost about $29.50.

Total parts cost would be $219.35… well below the starting price of $499 for the 16GB iPad. Manufacturing costs add just $10 to the total cost of the low-end model, bringing it to $229.35.

Mauro Dalu

ipad-gui-prototyping-in-photoshopWe discussed in the past what are the best tools out there to create mock-ups for an iPhone application storyboard — a document that describes the app flow and the desired user interaction that will get you much closer to prototyping.

A few days since the iPad has been shown in public for the first time and the iPhone SDK with the iPad simulator has been released, the first Photoshop (PSD) library of GUI (User Interface) elements has surfaced on the web…

iPad influencing the tablet market

Brad Midgley

Steve-Jobs-and-iPadMy first thought on seeing this image today was “wow… Steve Jobs looks really small now behind his big iPhone”. Fortunately, this isn’t a case of Steve shrinking, it’s the mobile computer that got bigger.

I believe there is a lot of potential for the Apple tablet and I’m excited to write software for it. I was a little bit disappointed with the realization that it is also a closed device…

Apple tablets running iPhone OS 3.2 spotted by Flurry Analytics

Mauro Dalu

iSlate Apple Tablet Demo Jan 26 2010It is just a matter of hours now to know the truth on iPad or iSlate devices, whatever the name will be… and I’ll be here updating you for sure.

In the meantime, Peter Farago, VP of of Marketing at Flurry, noted that his company believes the devices running iPhone OS 3.2 are Apple tablets because the hardware, when asked via software, did not identify itself as an iPhone. He also said that some devices testing iPhone OS 4.0 have been spotted — but they leave the Cupertino campus, while those running iPhone OS 3.2 do not.

“If you were able to see the data we see, at the level of granularity,” Farago said, “it would be clear to you as well.”

What if there is no Apple Tablet?

Mauro Dalu

Apple-FutureA few recent articles on various rumors sites made me think that in late January we may very well not see any Apple iSlate tablet-sized iPod-Touch-like or Mac-like device.

It is very likely that a new iPhone SDK will be introduced, and that this will allow iPhone Apps to support different screen resolutions. It is very likely that a 10-11″ OLED/LCD display based product will be introduced, but…

During his keynote at CES, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled a touchscreen tablet from HP running Windows 7, that was dubbed a “slate PC.” The touchscreen HP device that was shown was just one of many new products and services revealed by Ballmer. A YouTube video is available here.

Dell has briefly demoed a 5-inch device — which is reminiscent of larger Apple iPhone or iPod touch — also referring to it as a “slate.”

Apple to unveil the “iSlate” Tablet on January 26 asked developers to get their iPhone Apps ready

Mauro Dalu

iSlate Apple Tablet Demo Jan 26 2010Apple has scheduled a media event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco on Tuesday Jan. 26, 2010, for a major product announcement. “Apple is preparing an announcement next month that many anticipate will be the official unveiling of its tablet, but the company has so far declined to confirm the existence of the device,” the Financial Times reported. “Wall Street analysts expect mass production of an Apple tablet to begin as early as February.”

The most likely name is “iSlate”, a trademark currently owned by a possible shell company set up by Apple to quietly obtain U.S. trademark protection for the name.

“Apple is preparing to show off a new, larger mobile device with a higher resolution display in January — probably a version of the Apple tablet we’ve been hearing about for months — according to a plugged-in source in the mobile industry,” Silicon Alley Insider reported Wednesday…
