iSuppli Corp. reported that the multi-touch 9.7-inch display on the iPad could cost around $80, while its custom-designed A4 processor would cost about $17 per unit. The 16GB of memory is estimated to cost about $29.50.
Total parts cost would be $219.35… well below the starting price of $499 for the 16GB iPad. Manufacturing costs add just $10 to the total cost of the low-end model, bringing it to $229.35.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the long-awaited Apple Tablet today: the official name is iPad.
“iPad is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price,” Jobs said. “iPad creates and defines an entirely new category of devices that will connect users with their apps and content in a much more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”
Here’s a countdown for you to keep track of these few more hours to the Apple event that will unveil the Tablet device… We’re all waiting and we’ll be all watching for live updates.

It is just a matter of hours now to know the truth on iPad or iSlate devices, whatever the name will be… and I’ll be here updating you for sure.
In the meantime, Peter Farago, VP of of Marketing at Flurry, noted that his company believes the devices running iPhone OS 3.2 are Apple tablets because the hardware, when asked via software, did not identify itself as an iPhone. He also said that some devices testing iPhone OS 4.0 have been spotted — but they leave the Cupertino campus, while those running iPhone OS 3.2 do not.
“If you were able to see the data we see, at the level of granularity,” Farago said, “it would be clear to you as well.”
A few recent articles on various rumors sites made me think that in late January we may very well not see any Apple iSlate tablet-sized iPod-Touch-like or Mac-like device.

The CES in Las Vegas saw the debut of three new e-reader devices, while Dell and Microsoft have demonstrated prototypes of tablet devices (slate PCs).
During his keynote at CES, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled a touchscreen tablet from HP running Windows 7, that was dubbed a “slate PC.” The touchscreen HP device that was shown was just one of many new products and services revealed by Ballmer. A YouTube video is available here.
Dell has briefly demoed a 5-inch device — which is reminiscent of larger Apple iPhone or iPod touch — also referring to it as a “slate.”
Apple has scheduled a media event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco on Tuesday Jan. 26, 2010, for a major product announcement. “Apple is preparing an announcement next month that many anticipate will be the official unveiling of its tablet, but the company has so far declined to confirm the existence of the device,” the Financial Times reported. “Wall Street analysts expect mass production of an Apple tablet to begin as early as February.”
The most likely name is “iSlate”, a trademark currently owned by a possible shell company set up by Apple to quietly obtain U.S. trademark protection for the name.
“Apple is preparing to show off a new, larger mobile device with a higher resolution display in January — probably a version of the Apple tablet we’ve been hearing about for months — according to a plugged-in source in the mobile industry,” Silicon Alley Insider reported Wednesday…
