Apple: “it’s only rock and roll”, new iPod Touch lineup
Apple Introduced a New iPod touch Lineup today, September 9, 2009.
“At just $199 the iPod touch [8Gb model] is the most affordable gateway to Apple’s revolutionary App Store with more than 75,000 applications that you can wirelessly download right into your iPod touch,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.
Emulators on iPhone, C64 coming to the App Store
A Commodore 64 emulator that was previously rejected has been approved after the developer made changes to align it with Apple’s SDK. Then rejected again. Manomio’s $4.99 C64 title was rejected in June despite having lined up all the proper licensing rights.
iPod Touch & iPhone TV Video Out not working after OS 3.0 upgrade
Hello, I’m an iPod Touch first generation. I was just upgraded to OS 3.0 and now I refuse to work with any cheap AV-Out Composite cable you can find on eBay, Amazon or any other supplier.
Apple has been using lock-out chips to control third-party video accessory development and effectively preventing older, less expensive accessories from competing against Apple products…
Nokia, Apple iPhone and RIM are the real players in the smartphones market
Apple’s iPhone held onto a 13.7% share of global smartphone unit sales in Q2 2009, outpacing Microsoft’s Windows Mobile, which now claims just 9% of the market, according to Canalys.
Canalys specialises in delivering high quality market data, analysis and advice to the world’s leading technology vendors. The results of their research can be summarized as follows:
1. Nokia maintains global lead, although its performance varies by region
2. Touchscreens become the preferred interface, representing 40% of all shipments
3. Apple’s success continues, as the iPhone takes 23% of the North American market
4. RIM continues to gain share, succeeding with its push into the consumer market
5. Operating system choices are proliferating, primarily at Microsoft’s expense
“Apple has revolutionized the smart phone sector, leapfrogging more experienced rivals,” Canalys senior analyst Pete Cunningham said in the company’s report. Sales in the second quarter did not include much of the surge in new sales spurred by the release of the iPhone 3GS.
New iPod Touch and Nano with Cameras likely to be introduced on September 9
Apple will hold its annual iPod and media centric event for the week of Labor Day, scheduling the keynote for Wednesday, Sept. 9.
Expected to be a part of the event are “Cocktail” Apple’s full-length album download bundle with extras, and a new iPod touch and iPod nano, both sporting cameras, to be released together with a new version of iTunes, possibly with support for Blu-ray discs and social media integration.
Microsoft: Windows Mobile 6.5 vs. iPhone
Windows Mobile 6.5 will include Internet Explorer to reportedly provide a “better web experience” than the iPhone. How’s that? Simple: they are including Flash support. Microsoft compromised on Flash adoption in Windows Mobile 6.5 recognizing Adobe’s dominant position in the Web’s multimedia market, accepting not to push for adoption of its own Silverlight technology that was presented as a replacement to Adobe Flash.
The new OS release will also feature an Apple’s App Store-like system to purchase software for Windows Mobile powered phones. Microsoft recognizes Apple’s iPhone success so much it presented a document outlining how to port software form the iPhone platform to Windows Mobile 6.5.
The new document provides a case study on the iPhone application Amplitude, and how it was ported to Windows Mobile 6.5. The App Store offering from Gripwire.com aims to turn an iPhone or iPod touch into a sound amplifier. It was developed by Luke Thompson, a member of the company’s development team.
Microsoft said porting programs from the iPhone’s Objective-C to C# is relatively painless. The technical document concludes that iPhone developers can increase their revenue by offering their software to millions of Windows Mobile users.
Apple releases iPhone 3.0.1 update to fix SMS exploit
Firmware 3.0.1 is now available for the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS through iTunes. The update is around 300MB. Apparently, there is no new features or fixes other than the text message exploit patch.
The technique involves sending only one unusual text character or else a series of “invisible” messages that confuse the phone and open the door to attack. The hack was demonstrated at the Black Hat 2009 conference in Las Vegas. The attack takes advantage of a vulnerability in the phone’s short messaging service, or SMS, feature, allowing an outside party into the phone’s root access without the owner’s knowledge.
App Store improvements: better search engine, categorization, keywords support
Apple finally admitted that improvements were needed in helping users locate iPhone apps on the App Store. Developers are now asked to enter up to 255 characters of keywords, separated by commas, which will be used for search in the App Store on the iPhone and iPod touch.
“It is important to enter keywords for all applications as soon as possible so your application can continue to be successfully located on the App Store,” the update from Apple reads. “Keywords can be updated with the submission of a new binary.”
iPhone OS 3.1 SDK to support Augmented Reality
iPhone 3.1 Beta 3 is now accessible to those with an existing developer account. Apple also released a new iPhone SDK for OS 3.1.
iPhone OS 3.1 adds Bluetooth and video features. Users can now invoke Voice Control using a Bluetooth headset rather than a wired headset or the built-in microphone. When editing video clips, users can save a copy of the trimmed video instead of permanently losing the discarded ends. The new SDK also allows developers to connect to and work with a system wirelessly, without the tether of a USB cable.
