iPhone OS 3.0 Not Worth $10 for iPod Touch Users?

Mauro Dalu

ipod-touch-iphone-os-3-adoption-ratioA new study by Chitika Research claims that “despite its hype, iPhone OS 3.0 had very little to offer iPod Touch users. Push notifications? MMS? Tethering? Essentially useless on a device that relies on WiFi for a connection. iPod Touch users are essentially asked to pay for copy/paste, in-app purchases, and the ability to buy a segment of the latest apps from the app store.”

The ad network’s sample data shows that 94.4% of iPhone users upgraded to OS 3.0, and only 55.24% of iPod Touch users upgraded.

Microsoft: Windows Mobile 6.5 vs. iPhone

Mauro Dalu

iphone-vs-windowsWindows Mobile 6.5 will include Internet Explorer to reportedly provide a “better web experience” than the iPhone. How’s that? Simple: they are including Flash support. Microsoft compromised on Flash adoption in Windows Mobile 6.5 recognizing Adobe’s dominant position in the Web’s multimedia market, accepting not to push for adoption of its own Silverlight technology that was presented as a replacement to Adobe Flash.

The new OS release will also feature an Apple’s App Store-like system to purchase software for Windows Mobile powered phones. Microsoft recognizes Apple’s iPhone success so much it presented a document outlining how to port software form the iPhone platform to Windows Mobile 6.5.

The new document provides a case study on the iPhone application Amplitude, and how it was ported to Windows Mobile 6.5. The App Store offering from Gripwire.com aims to turn an iPhone or iPod touch into a sound amplifier. It was developed by Luke Thompson, a member of the company’s development team.

Microsoft said porting programs from the iPhone’s Objective-C to C# is relatively painless. The technical document concludes that iPhone developers can increase their revenue by offering their software to millions of Windows Mobile users.

Apple releases iPhone 3.0.1 update to fix SMS exploit

Mauro Dalu

Firmware 3.0.1 is now available for the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS through iTunes. The update is around 300MB. Apparently, there is no new features or fixes other than the text message exploit patch.

The technique involves sending only one unusual text character or else a series of “invisible” messages that confuse the phone and open the door to attack. The hack was demonstrated at the Black Hat 2009 conference in Las Vegas.

iPhone OS 3.0 adoption rates: how many iPhone and iPod Touch users are upgrading?

Mauro Dalu

admob_iphone_os3_adoption_rate1During the WWDC keynote, Apple stated that more then 40 million iPhone OS devices are around, which obviously includes the iPhone and iPod touch.  Of those 40+ million devices, according to Apple’s announcement dated June 22, six million had the new OS installed within the first week after its release. That is about a 15 percent iPhone OS 3.0 adoption rate in one week.

But how many of those are iPhones and how many are iPods Touch?
As always, we miss the official data from Apple… and that alone tells the story.

The same day, AdMob, the mobile advertisement platform, released their own OS 3 adoption rate statistics showing a rather less optimistic big picture of the market. The facts suggest that most iPhone users are installing the OS 3.0 as soon as they find the time to follow the process, while iPod Touch users are upgrading only when they are strictly required in order to continue using their device or their favorite Apps.

iPhone Tethering How-to, the 3G Internet Sharing minor mystery

Mauro Dalu

iphone-tethering-how-toIt all started around 1 year ago, when the $10 NetShare app appeared on the App Store. It was a SOCKS proxy that linked an ad-hoc WiFi network to the iPhone’s 3G or EDGE connection. Users of the iPhone 3G have wanted to use the handset’s high-speed connection with a laptop or desktop for a while, and developer Nullriver created an application to fill that need. The application, NetShare, was pulled, returned, and then finally banished from the App Store, apparently because it violated AT&T’s terms of service…

Rhodes vs. iPhone SDK, which is better for me?

Mauro Dalu

rhodes-framework-mobile-developmentIn case your target is to deploy your mobile app to several mobile platforms — such as iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Symbian and Windows Mobile — we can provide custom mobile development and design your application so that it works well on all these mobile platforms with very little additional effort, using a new cross-platform mobile framework called Rhodes. Rhodes will allow us to create one application that will run on all platforms and re-skin it to look like a native application on each system, effectively reducing the overall development costs.

Sounds great, but does Rhodes add any additional hurdles that would not be encountered if we used iPhone SDK?
